Around 33% of Australian adults suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension). Here at NIIM we’ve been conducting research and clinical trials – including publication of two systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and four clinical trials – to investigate how daily consumption of aged garlic can impact people with hypertension.
The results show three main benefits of the effects of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract.
- Improved blood pressure
- Reduced arterial stiffness
- Changes to gut microbiota
More than 90% of participants in the NIIM studies have shown a reduction in blood pressure after taking Kyolic Aged Garlic.
The active stable ingredient S-allylcysteine (SAC) is responsible for Kyolic’s effect on blood pressure, with the optimal daily intake amount per person being 2 capsules of aged garlic extract of the Kyolic High Potency Formula a day (1.2mg).
We found, that Kyolic aged garlic extract was able to reduce blood pressure similarly to standard blood pressure medication, with an average of 10 mmHg systolic and 6 mmHg diastolic. Importantly, this was achieved whether or not patients were already taking standard blood pressure medication.
What does this mean?
These results show that people with hypertension can benefit from taking Kyolic Aged Garlic to help reduce their blood pressure, which reduces the chance of heart disease and stroke.
Can I just add fresh garlic to my meals and get the same results?
“Fresh garlic is a great ingredient to add to your favourite meals, but once it’s cooked it loses much of its active blood pressure reducing component – allicin. Allicin is the ingredient that provides the beneficial effect on blood pressure” says Associate Professor Karin Ried.
All types of garlic, including fresh and cooked garlic, as well as aged garlic extract contain prebiotics, which help good bacteria to grow while also slowing down the growth of bad bacteria. This in turn will contribute to a healthy gut microbiome, and is beneficial for your immune system.
Arterial Stiffness
Arterial Stiffness = stiff arteries = less oxygen uptake, which impacts how quickly blood flows through your arteries.
Our NIIM studies have also found Kyolic has reduced arterial stiffness.
“As people age, it’s normal for arteries to become stiffer. But in three months, Kyolic was able to reduce arterial stiffness by five years” says Associate Professor Karin Ried.
“In our current Kyolic aerobic fitness study, we are testing the hypothesis, when you take in more oxygen, due to the slower blood flow, you’re improving your aerobic fitness. This may assist you with better recovery times and better lung capacity in middle-aged people – which can make exercising easier, more enjoyable and you’ll generally exercise more.”

Are there any other benefits to taking Kyolic Aged Garlic?
Yes, NIIM Research has found Kyolic aged garlic extract to normalise cholesterol levels, to normalise blood stickiness, and to strengthen a healthy gut microbiome, and immunity.
