What will our Naturopaths will test for?

The following tests are for any individuals who suspect they may have a thyroid issue or condition. A thorough thyroid assessment looks at the adrenals, a full investigation of the thyroid, and consider these downstream impacts. Thyroid conditions are often missed due to the wide reference range of the routine thyroid test (TSH), which is why we look at 12 different markers including TSH – the messenger hormone from the pituitary to the thyroid, stimulating the thyroid to make thyroid hormones. Your Naturopath will discuss testing options with you during your initial consult.

  • Free T4 – the less active thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid
  • Free T3 – T4 converts into T3, which is 5-7x more active
  • Thyroid antibodies – indicating the immune system is attacking the thyroid, this may occur for some time before other thyroid markers are affected
  • Reverse T3 – an inactive thyroid hormone which competes with T3
  • Spot urinary iodine – iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones
  • Plasma zinc – zinc is a cofactor that encourages the conversion of T4 into T3 rather than reverse T3
  • Saliva cortisol – elevated cortisol impedes thyroid function
  • Selenium – supports conversion from inactive to active thyroid hormone and protects the thyroid gland against antibodies
  • CRP – detects inflammation
  • Vitamin D – important for modulating the immune system.
  • Iron – important to activate thyroid hormone.

After the tests and assessments, your naturopath will develop a plan to support your body to function at its optimal level, helping you to feel more balanced and at ease.

This may include a combination of some or all of the following, depending on your assessment results:

  • Nutritional and diet education & advice
