What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a natural system of healing that integrates traditional approaches with a modern evidence-based understanding of health.

Naturopathy takes a holistic healing approach, considering the patient, their lifestyle, environment, and individual circumstances in the management of health conditions. Naturopathic health care focuses on identifying and treating the cause of an illness, rather than the symptoms alone, and supporting the body to heal itself by strengthening the body’s systems through natural interventions.

Your NIIM naturopath will have qualifications in herbal medicine and nutritional medicine, as well as additional qualifications and areas of interest, and may use herbs, nutritional medicine, dietary management, lifestyle counselling, and nutraceuticals in your treatment plan.

Your naturopath can serve as your primary health care provider or support your health management alongside your doctor, depending on your health needs.

Who would benefit from treatment with naturopathy?

A wide variety of people may benefit from the healthcare support of a naturopath, in particular, those looking to address the following issues:

  • Integrative cancer care and support, including nutritional support during treatment
  • Energy levels, including those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and adrenal fatigue
  • Autoimmune issues, including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid conditions
  • Food intolerance
  • Digestion issues, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease
  • Weight, including support with fat loss or muscle gain
  • Optimum health maintenance

What can I expect at my naturopathy consultation?

Your initial consultation will be a longer session of about one hour, with shorter follow ups tailored to match your needs. Your naturopath will take a history of any health issues, and may ask general questions about your diet, sleep, exercise, work, stress and other relevant lifestyle factors. Some tests may be performed during the consultation, such as a body composition analysis.

To improve the efficiency of your first consultation, you may be asked to bring any recent medical reports with you, such as blood tests or x-rays. Your naturopath may also recommend further specific tests to help tailor your treatment.

Your naturopath will work with you to achieve your health goals through the use of lifestyle and dietary changes, exercise recommendations, herbs, supplements and, where appropriate, referrals to other healthcare practitioners.
