A recent Study lead by Dr Karin Ried has studied Garlic, it’s blood pressure-lowering properties and it’s potential use as a treatment for Hypertension, a medical condition that affects about 30% of adults worldwide.
Dr Karin Ried’s trial assessed the effect, dose–response, tolerability and acceptability of different doses of aged garlic extract as an adjunct treatment to existing antihypertensive medication in patients with uncontrolled hypertension. At the conclusion of the trial, patients who consumed two capsules of aged garlic extract daily had a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of 11.8±5.4 mm Hg over a 12-week period. Meanwhile patients in the group consuming 4 garlic capsules daily achieved a borderline significant reduction of −7.4±4.1 mm Hg at 8 weeks.
These results suggest that aged garlic extract could be an effective and tolerable treatment in uncontrolled hypertension, and may be considered as a safe adjunct treatment to conventional antihypertensive therapy.
